Pot Limit Poker: Minimum Raise
When raising a bet in a Pot Limit game your raise must be equal to or more than any previous bet in the same round. If no bet has been previously been made then your bet must be at least as much as the set table bet amount. For example, in a $1/$2 No Limit game, a player bets $5 then to raise you must raise a minimum of $5 (total bet of $10). If no bet has been made then your bet must be at least equal the table stakes of $1 or $2 depending on the round you are on in the hand.
Pot Limit Poker: Maximum Raise
In a Pot Limit poker game the only limits to the amount you can bet is the amount you have on the table and the size of the current pot.
You may not bet more than the current pot size.
The size of the pot is defined as the total of the pot in the middle plus all bets on the table plus the amount the active player must first call before raising the bet.
The calculation for a pot limit raise would work like this. Assume there is $10 already in the pot and player A bets $2, player B calls the $2 bet. It's your turn and you want to raise the bet. The minimum you can bet is $2 because that is what the current bet is to you. The maximum you can raise is $16, this maximum amount is figured by adding the $10 already in the pot, plus the $2 bet from player A plus the $2 call from player B, plus a $2 call from you to make the pot right. There is now $16 in the pot so you can raise $16 (10+2+2+2=16). Player C can now raise $48, your $16 raise plus the $16 already in the pot plus player C's call for your raise of $16 (10+2+2+2+16+16=48).
